If you do not know what to get someone for a wedding gift, you are not alone. It is harder today to find the right gift than it was just a few decades ago. Because people use to get married before they lived together, and did not often live alone long before marriage, most newly married couples needed just about everything to stock their new home. Today, many couples cohabitate and may not need much, or they have lived alone for so long they have all that they need for their shared home after marriage. Don't worry though, there are great wedding presents out there if household items are not needed.
Many couples have registries for things that they feel they want for wedding presents. While some think that this is tacky, others are thankful that they have a list from which they can choose to get something they know the couple needs. If there are household things that they need, they are going to include them in their registry for wedding gifts. Those that already live in the same home may have everything, but they may need some things replaced. This is a great way to be sure you get what they want.
You certainly do not have to use the registry when you are getting wedding presents. There are some couples that get upset when you do not, but they are certainly not the majority. Most getting married know that this is just a guide and a convenience, but not the say all in what the couple should get. You can always get them something that you know they are going to love, even if that item is not on the list for wedding gifts. Many of these gifts end up being favorites, as there is no way to include everything that you may like on a wedding gift registry.
If you want an out-of-the-ordinary choice, think about things that are not usually given as wedding presents. Depending on how much you want to spend, there are great ideas that the couple may love. Parents sometimes pay for a honeymoon as a gift, which is a great present if you can afford it. There are plenty of smaller things that you could do that cost a lot less. Pay for the couple's hotel room on their wedding night if they are going to stay one night before leaving for their honeymoon. Perhaps you could pay for the flowers or something else needed for their big day. Those ideas always make great wedding presents.
There is always cash as an option as well. You may not think that cash is high on the list as a thoughtful gift, but it can be a great one. If a couple is buying a house, this may be the best thing you could give them. You could also give them gift certificates for nights out at the movies or a certificate for their favorite restaurant. If they are registered with a store but you don't want to choose something from the registry as wedding presents, you can always just get them a certificate from that store so they can get whatever they wanted the most once the wedding is over.
