Have you ever bought an existing home and felt like you were living in someone elses space? This happened to my husband and I when we moved into our lake home. We loved the set up of the old house; however there was wallpaper in several rooms as well as stenciling. Neither one of us had grown up with wallpapered walls nor stenciling on the walls and we did not care for this. Once we had moved all of our belongings into the house and started to get settled we decided that we needed to change things to make the house feel more like it belonged to us.

We started with the guest room because this would be the least disruptive. The guest room had lavender walls with purple flowers stenciled around the window frames, closet doors and the door frame. There were curtains with purple flowers. The room would be great for a little old lady in the nursing home, but it did not fit us. We used primer to cover the stenciling paint so it would not bleed through. We painted three walls gold and the wall with the large window in it we painted a deep green. We put shutters on the windows that could be folded opened or closed. The room has rather strange dimensions. There was a corner that would be perfect for a corner shelf. We were decorating in a woodsy theme so we thought we would use country pine furniture in it. Our new neighbors told us about a store in the large city next to use that specializes in country pine furniture. The man makes all of it himself. He has several pieces to choose from and it you need something that he does not have he will make it for you.

We went and looked at the country pine furniture and found a corner shelf as well as a deacon bench that fit perfectly into the room. Both pieces had bears carved into them. This was perfect because we placed my husbands bear rug next to the bed and also put hunting pictures on the new shelf. I found a bedspread that was the same dark green as the wall. I bought material that had the green and gold colors in as well as material that had bears on it. I used the material to sew pillows to scatter on the bed. The room is inviting and fits into the northern wooed area where our house is located. Most of the guests that stay with us are his hunting buddies, so they really appreciate the room. We laugh that they would have had nightmares in the room if we had left all the stenciled flowers.
