I am a social worker. In my line of work I deal with a wide variety of clients. I have done many types of different jobs I started my career working with adolescents that had emotional and behavioral problems. When I left that job I went to work for a government agency. I put in twenty years working for the government and now I am working for a non-profit agency. Through the years I have seen and heard many stories about how cruel human beings can be towards each other. There are times when it is difficult to keep any faith in mankind.
Each individual I work with has their unique story. Many times the stories involve physical, sexual or emotional abuse. I feel my job is to help stop the patterns of abuse so that the children will not have to experience it. Many times the women that I work with become desperate for a relationship. They have been taught that they need to have a man in their lives to be worthy. This desperation at times clouds judgment. Many of the women write to inmates and feel that they are going to have a long term relationship with the inmate when they get out of prison. I have started doing a prison inmate search on each of the guys that the women are writing to. The prison inmate search lists the crimes and punishment. There are times when seeing these reports have no affect on the women. They feel the guy is being honest with them.
I do think I saved on client a great deal of pain by doing a prison inmate search on the man that she was writing to. The search showed that he had several domestic assaults, several contempts of court for not following restraining orders, and two counts of attempted murder with a shovel. The inmate had told my client that he had been set up to break the restraining order. He had failed to mention the other charges. He also has twelve years of a fifteen year sentence. He had told her that he had less than a year left in prison. She was very hurt to find out the pack of lies she had been told. She agreed that most people that are locked in prison or jail need to have something to keep them going, however she did not feel that she wanted to waste twelve years waiting for him to get out of prison. We looked up additional information about the shovel incident and found out that he had used the shovel on his wife as well as their ten year old son. The son sustained head trauma and the wife is so battered and broken that no one knows how she will do. Always make sure you check out inmates prior to disclosing details about yourself to them.
