If you're young, or young at heart, very short hairstyles are the trendy new look for men and women!
With the weather finally starting to warm up, you'll find if you look around, you'll notice, more and more, very short hairstyles are the trendy new look, being worn by men and women alike. As with fashion, what comes around eventually goes around in hair styles. If you take a peek back to the late 60s, you'll recall the 'pixie' do, brought to huge popularity by celebs such as Mia Farrow. It seems that this generation has one-upped Ms. Farrow today. When we're talking very short hairstyles, we're talking military short!
I'd been noticing this trend on the avant garde of the younger generation lately. Then, just this weekend, my husband and I went next door to our neighbor's for a backyard barbecue. Their two sons and some of their friends were there. The youngest son, 19, has sported long black hair for many years. I almost fainted when he came outside. He'd shaved it to the skin. Hey, Casey, what happened? He was quite pleased. Went to a party and we all decided to do a buzz cut. Cool, huh?
His older brother still has his hair long, with a large fire engine red streak down the side. As we're munching on burgers and chicken, Casey's friend came out to get advice from Casey's Mom. He had a regular shaving razor in his hand. I tried cutting my hair, but this won't do it! He held up a small lock of hair to indicate the meager progress he'd made on his way to the latest, trendy and very short hairstyle. Ah, to have the courage of the young. Mom advised him to try a pair of scissors to cut it short, really short, before proceeding with the razor.
Soon, the partly shorn young guy came out, on his way home, presumably to finish the job. He and Casey took off. Just a short while later, they returned. The kid was now as close to bald as he could be. He paraded his very short hairstyle around the yard, beaming with pleasure. Casey's Mom clapped in applause. Well, that didn't take long! How did you do that? Proudly, the kid responded, I used the dog hair cutter! Now doesn't that take the cake?
I couldn't believe what happened next. Casey's Dad disappeared into the house. When he reappeared ten minutes later, his regular older-dude haircut was now a very short hairstyle indeed. He explained that it was practical for working in warm weather. Everyone was speechless.
I guess once this hair shearing got started, they couldn't stop. The family dog, a small, cute little thing with fuzzy, curly hair was next. We went home before seeing the results of that chic dog's cut. At least they did the dog last!
Nonetheless, it's obvious to me that very short hairstyles are the new trend. It's not just that I live in a strange region of the country. You can see this look in national fashion magazines, and on the celebs.
The advantages to this trendy new look are obvious. It's cool for the hot summer months and certainly easy to wash. However, can't you get a sunburn on your head? Ouch. You could still be trendy with your very short hairstyle, with a few inches of curls. I guess it's a good thing that baseball caps, so popular with the young, are adjustable.
