Everyone wants to have a spiritual relationship, but for many of us dating is anything but spiritual. There's this constant need to impress the person you're with, to evaluate whether or not they are right for you, what they have to offer and what they don't, that can get in the way of a deeper spiritual understanding of them. Even after you have been involved with someone for a long time, it can be hard to cultivate deeply spiritual relationships. Between the needs of career, raising a family, keeping up your appearances, and all the rest of it, spirituality can often take a back burner.
This can cause a feeling of soul sickness and emptiness that can actually harm many different aspects of the relationship. Marriage problems, frequent arguing, and even infidelity can result from being in a relationship where you're not spiritually fulfilled. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to get a spiritual relationship going. It requires careful work, patience, and a loving temperament.
The first step is always to get it together in your own heart and soul, but this is harder than it sounds. When you haven't been in a spiritual relationship for a long time, it can be easy to get stuck in inertia. The important thing is to keep making progress forward once you decide to start moving. Pray a little bit, use guided meditation, and make resolutions to develop your own personal spirituality. You can encourage your partner to join, but don't pressure them. Initially, it should be just your own pursuit.
As you grow yourself, you can help your partner to grow to, and to develop a more spiritual relationship between the two of you. Sometimes, spiritual counseling can help. Other times, you might actually have to start a new relationship. There are spiritual dating sites cropping up now that will give you a lot more options about how to find Mr. or Mrs. right. You just need to have faith and stay with it. Eventually, things will work out as they should. They always do.
The most spiritual relationship I ever had actually happened when I was intentionally single. I had decided I didn't want to be involved in anyone for a while, and was enjoying spending hours in meditation and quiet contemplation. I was absolutely flabbergasted when I met the perfect woman at a meditation retreat. I tried not to get involved, but the time was right for both of us. We developed a deeply spiritual relationship that lasted for many years. Although time eventually brought us apart, I'm sure that she still treasures the experience as much as I do. I know that for me it was a life-changing event.
