1940s fashion in America has inspired style choices people still make today in 2009. 1940s fashion helped women accentuate the attractive parts of their bodies while hiding the parts they weren t so crazy about. These days women still wear clothes that are easier to move and work in while trying to flatter themselves as much as possible.
Simplicity is what comes to mind when thinking of 1940s fashion. Women s lifestyles changed dramatically and they were expected to keep up their homes and support their families while the men were away serving their countries. Women took jobs everywhere the could and this meant that primping for hours a day and wearing frivolous clothing would no longer make sense. Many clothing options were not available any longer so women had to refocus on what dressing everyday meant.
There was a lot of emphasis on the female form and women often had a belt or band around their waists, creating an hourglass shape. Their skirts were often tea length or hit the leg just below the knee. Shoulder pads were used to create an architectural affect, making the female form bolder and almost more masculine.
Rows of buttons ran up necklines and sleeves to add flair to dresses often with bows to be tied at the very top. Sometimes, extra fabric was used in the back of the dress to create a draping effect. These embellishments were the only frivolous characteristic of 1940s fashion. How useful the clothing could be was more important than the beauty and overall style of the outfit. Women had to be ready to step into men s shoes in an instant and their clothes had to reflect this. Women began wearing clothes that were easier to clean and access.
Since many women had to work during wartime, they did not have a lot of time or use for elaborate hairstyles. Since most products were rationed, women did not have access to a lot of products for their hair. Makeup was also scarce but some major companies made it a point to make sure women were given fresh supplies of makeup.
Men often wore service uniforms from the army, navy or air force. It was not uncommon to see these uniforms everywhere from museums to restaurants. Men took pride in serving their country and the classic uniforms symbolize bravery and perseverance. Men these days still wear their military uniforms when they are serving their country and when home on leave with family and friends.
