Nothing is worse than waking up, getting out of bed, and feeling a familiar tightening across your back. Either you slept funny or you over did it the day before, and now your muscles are riddled with knots and twists. Sure, you could take an ibuprofen, or even a stronger muscle relaxant, but nothing quite gets the knots out like a back massage. There are a variety of types of back massages, and each has its own healing affect.

Swedish or Basic Massage- This is the type of back massage to get if you've never had one before, as it's probably similar to what you might have received from a friend or loved one over the years. A Swedish back massage involves stroking, kneading and using circular movements to undo the tension in your back.

Hot Stone Massage- This back massage involves the placement of hot, smooth stones on certain pressure points in the back in order to release tension and balance the energies in your body. It is best executed with the masseuse applies pressure to the stones while on your back.

Shiatsu Massage- This back massage is not for the faint of heart. Japanese in origin, the practice of shiatsu involves rhythmic fingertip pressure to points in the body commonly targeted in acupuncture. At times, it can be uncomfortable, but the results are amazing.

Deep Tissue Massage- Deep tissue massage is a form of back massage that is wonderful for managing chronic pain. It requires the masseuse to use heavy pressure and friction techniques to access the deeper layers of muscle tissue and relieve the tension that rests there. That type of tension can only be accessed with intense pressure, so while it may seem a little strong during the massage, it is one of the best back massages for alleviating intense back pain.

Specialized Massage- A lot of massage clinics offer specially designed back massages that will target the specific problem areas of the client's back. While typically more expensive, these back massages will usually give you the most bang for your buck, as the masseuse will use a multitude of techniques, including the aforementioned tactics, to access your personal pain.

Back massages are often considered a luxury. However, if you can afford to treat yourself to a Swedish, Hot Stone, Shiatsu, Deep Tissue or Specialized massage, you certainly will not regret it. Check your listings for a massage parlor near you today!
